Derserved Much Better On A Great Perforamance!
Meridian FC travelled away to Lewisham Borough Community FC in which Meridian knew they could achieve the right result today.
The game started with great tempo from Meridian as the home opposition found it hard to contain the pressure applied and positive football played which caused many problems for Lewisham.
Chances were created by Meridian only to be thwarted by resilient defending and an unorthodox goalkeeper.
It was not until the 23rd minute and against the run of play Lewisham attacked down their left side with a cross from the midfielder to the smallest player on the pitch who guided his header neatly into the top left of Meridian’s goal 1-0.
Two more quick goals came from Lewisham on the 30 & 39 minute making a comfortable cushion for the home team.
Credit where credit is due as meridian never stopped as all the team carried on pushing, applying pressure and moving the ball very well. This was in evident in Meridian’s first goal on the 42nd minute with a fluent move from midfield and a very well crafted goal with a neat flick on from Guy Munianga into Wayon Anderson who managed to get the right touch only falling back to Guy as he shot and Wayon receiving the last touch off the shot 3-1.
Meridian was not fazed by the score line as the result at half time should have been in Meridian’s favour.
The second half was where Meridian knew they had to push and that they did with new players entering the field of play it proved to be the right tonic as pressure was telling on the home team.
Meridian defended better with new debutants together with the movement of the ball which was a pleasure to the eye.
It was not until the 71st minute with a rare attack from the home team down the left with a hopeful delivery did Meridian concede, to what was a great volley from the edge of the 18 yard box into the top left corner, goalkeeper no chance 4-1.
Meridian still did not feel that this was deserved and pushed immediately with a fluent move down the right side as Tiawo Ikponosa delivered the quality cross needed as Guy Munianga popped up with a glancing back header has it looped over the keeper in no mans land 4-2.
The game was not lost has Meridian pushed harder raising to the next level but with time running out Lewisham where thankful that the final whistle came and finally got their win.
It must be said that this game was played in the right spirit and respect with good officiating by all.
Meridian now must look forward to next week’s 6 pointer and so called cup final against Crockenhill FC.
